Whether it makes sense or not, the upcoming hard fork that is expected next month may be boosting Bitcoin’s price. In August, before the last hard fork that Bitcoin experienced, the price shot up to almost $5,000 before the fork, reaching all time highs and reached more all time highs afterwards as well. Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum has recently announced that he created an entity separate from the Ethereum Foundation, Ethereum Russia, and plans to use this to collaborate with Russian banks and universities. As of now, Ethereum Russia is partnered with one university, The National University of Science and Technology (MISIS) as well as one bank, namely Vnesheconombank (VEB) but there is a lot of promise for Vitalik’s new partnerships in Russia. As of block 481,824, Bitcoin received its largest protocol upgrade yet. Segregated Witness, or SegWit for short, is the controversial, long awaited modification to the Bitcoin protocol that is effectively increasing the blocksize by about double. SegWit rearranges the blocks that store Bitcoin transaction data in such a way that it is expected that the individual blocks will be able to hold twice as many transactions, and up to four times as many depending on transaction size. In 2015, a concept to solve Bitcoin’s scalability issue was first proposed. Today, a year and a half later, the widely accepted solution to Bitcoin’s scalability problem has been locked in earlier this afternoon, namely SegWit, or Segregated Witness. SegWit solves part of Bitcoin’s scalability problems by removing signature data from transactions, or ‘segregating’ it, allowing for more transactions to be fit within a block by freeing up space that was previously occupied by these signatures. Yesterday, August 1st, the Bitcoin Blockchain experienced a hard fork, as we reported on in our last article. This fork brought with it a new form of cryptocurrency in the form of Bitcoin Cash (BCH).
