Coming in the middle of this month, November of 2017, Bitcoin will be undergoing what is possibly the largest hard fork to date. All over SegWit2x, a controversial scaling solution, of which it is currently halfway to being completely implemented. In August, the Bitcoin network underwent a separate hard fork that created Bitcoin Cash, due to the opposition to SegWit. With SegWit2x, there seems to be even more opposition to the scaling solution, partially due to a lack of protection against… [ 207 more words ] https://bitcoincenternyc.com/bitcoin-news/segwit2x-upcoming-fork-affecting-bitcoin/

Whether it makes sense or not, the upcoming hard fork that is expected next month may be boosting Bitcoin’s price. In August, before the last hard fork that Bitcoin experienced, the price shot up to almost $5,000 before the fork, reaching all time highs and reached more all time highs afterwards as well. The same seems to be happening already, even though the fork isn’t expected to happen until next month. As of block 481,824, Bitcoin received its largest protocol upgrade yet. Segregated Witness, or SegWit for short, is the controversial, long awaited modification to the Bitcoin protocol that is effectively increasing the blocksize by about double. SegWit rearranges the blocks that store Bitcoin transaction data in such a way that it is expected that the individual blocks will be able to hold twice as many transactions, and up to four times as many depending on transaction size. In 2015, a concept to solve Bitcoin’s scalability issue was first proposed. Today, a year and a half later, the widely accepted solution to Bitcoin’s scalability problem has been locked in earlier this afternoon, namely SegWit, or Segregated Witness. SegWit solves part of Bitcoin’s scalability problems by removing signature data from transactions, or ‘segregating’ it, allowing for more transactions to be fit within a block by freeing up space that was previously occupied by these signatures. Today, August 1st, 2017, the bitcoin network experienced a hard fork. This means that a portion of the Bitcoin community, particularly a large mining group, left the original Bitcoin blockchain and instead mine “Bitcoin Cash”, while the rest of the community continues to use the original blockchain. Although there is a group of Bitcoiners want to abandon Bitcoin in favor of Bitcoin Cash, the price of bitcoin is showing no signs of concern amongst the market.
