Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management, and Meteorological Services, Mr. Meleti Bainimarama, officiated at Sappers Day, commemorated by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Engineers at Nabuni Camp in Nabua on Friday, November 3,2017. Sappers Day derives its name from the French word Sappe which referred to personnel who engaged in digging trenches or tunnels for war purposes. Today, Sappers Day is connected with military engineering and is celebrated by military engineering regiments in several countries around the world such as Australia, New Zealand, and France. Addressing the engineers, Mr. Bainimarama said that they have played an important role in nation building. Mr. Bainimarama reflected on the RFMF Engineer s contribution to rural development through the construction of public infrastructure. He also commended them on their continuous support to Government and the people of Fiji during times of disasters. Approximately 300 RFMF engineers were present with their families at the Sappers Day commemoration.
